Heavy rain makes the Miami Valley a breeding ground for mosquitoes
MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio (WRGT/WKEF)These days it feels like we can’t catch a break from the rain.
What also may feel like a constant bug, mosquitoes.
“I live in the country and I got some water around me, so they can be kind of bad around the summertime,” said Joe Freeman.
The rain is making them worse.
“We’re finding that water is puddling and standing in areas that have never had puddles before,” said Larry Shaffer, Director of Environmental Health at the Clark County Health District.
He said it’s greatly increased the breeding numbers.
“Some of the traps have had up to seven times the number of mosquitoes we’ve ever trapped before,” said Shaffer.
That’s why it’s important not to leave standing water in kid’s toys, buckets or birdbaths.
Dan Suffoletto, a spokesman for the Public Health- Dayton & Montgomery County, said since mosquitoes don’t fly far, it’s important for everyone to do their part.
“They only travel about 100 yards, so they’re going to stay within a pretty confined area, so if you and your neighbors can all work together that will help your neighborhood.”
You also need to use the right bug spray.
Health experts say you want to look for bug spray with ingredients like oil of lemon eucalyptus, picaridin, and deet.
Anna Jean Petroff, Clark County Health District Epidemiologist, said when it comes to natural bug spray there’s really not enough info about the effectiveness of non-EPA registered insect repellent.
“If you want to do it naturally the best way is to cover up wearing long sleeves and long pants,” said Petroff.
Be sure to check the bottle for the EPA label and do not spray children younger than 2-months old.
